Why gross of costs? Every broker charges differently — commission, spread and financing depend on the broker, the account and the country — and the slippage on a market-open fill cannot be forecast honestly. So we publish the model's own result and let you apply your own costs: take your round-trip cost per trade as a percentage, multiply it by the number of trades, and divide by the 20 equal positions the model holds (each trade is about 1/20 of the portfolio); multiply by the leverage if you use it. Subtract the result from the return. For example, 0.10% per round trip × 1,787 trades ÷ 20 ≈ 8.9 percentage points over 2023–2026 at 1x, before compounding.

Open positions show the last close in place of an exit. Fills at the next session's open, 1x, gross of costs — hypothetical, not advice.

Who this is for

If you hold positions for days to months and want a rules-based, regime-aware read on when a name is in a favourable state, this is your door. If you trade minute bars or scalp perps, it is honestly not your tool: the whole engine works on daily bars and publishes after the close. We would rather tell you that now than sell you a cadence we do not run.

The methodology, in plain terms

A Hidden Markov Model classifies each asset into an unobservable market regime — accumulation, trending, distribution, high-volatility — inferred purely from the statistical structure of returns and volatility. That regime read is one of nine dimensions scored every night: HMM regime, Technical, Trend, Support/Resistance, Fundamental, Sector Edge, Sentiment, Momentum and Pattern. The composite is a view, not a recommendation. The pipeline runs after market close and re-scores the entire universe as new daily bars land.

How often does the regime change? Measured on the nightly history of about 1,240 assets over the last twelve months: a typical asset switches regime about 15 times a year. Most switches are short, a median regime lasts 4 sessions, yet more than half of all trading days sit inside regimes that last a month or longer. Single stocks are the jumpiest (US stocks about 14 switches a year, other markets about 25); indices, currencies and commodities are calmer at 8 to 10 a year, with a median regime of three to five weeks. The InvestMuse HMM AlgoTrader acts only on a switch, so on most days it does nothing on purpose. (Measured 6 October 2026.)

What “win rate” means here

Win rate = the share of closed trades that ended positive, across the strategy's full universe over the stated window. It is a diagnostic, not a performance claim: a win rate says nothing about the size of wins versus losses. A strategy can have a high win rate and still lose money if its losers are large — which is why we show profit factor, drawdown and Sharpe alongside it, never win rate alone.

Honest limitations

The tracked record covers a multi-year window in specific market environments; a different period could look different. It is hypothetical: a model portfolio, not a fund you can buy. Everything here is end-of-day by design — it says nothing about intraday moves, and past patterns do not guarantee future results. We show all of this because a strategy you can only see through the marketing is not one you can trust.
